Walnut Canyon

Walnut Canyon National Monument lies 10 miles east of Flagstaff, Arizona. It encompasses over 3500 acres of rich and well preserved remains of a Sinagua community. The ruins can best be seen on the Island Trail. This trail descends 185 feet down to an island of rock, which protrudes out, into the 400 deep foot canyon. On this trail visitors can actually view the ruins at close hand which is different than at Montezuma’s Castle. The trail is about a mile in length. While this doesn’t seem like much distance, for those of you not accustomed to the high desert keep in mind that the altitude is around 7,000 feet and climbing the 240 steps back up to the park center from the Island Trail can be very taxing on your body. Benches are located at various places along the climb back up to rest on, so you need not be to scared to attempt this trail. Also one should remember that this is the desert. A leading cause for hikers to need assistance in returning to the visitor center is dehydration.

One of two things had to be true about the Anazazi:

1.) They were short
        or
2.) They knew enough to duck

The kid really hit his head!
